What's In Our Library?

Check out these best sellers in the PUMC Library:

Looking to read more about what you are learning in your Sunday adult class? Check out books by best selling author, Brian McLaren, in the spiritual life section of the PUMC Library. McLaren is a major spokesman in the emerging church movement. His book, A New Kind of Christianity, asks ten critical questions that are transforming the faith. Everything Must Change challenges our thinking about how the life and teaching of Jesus address the most critical global problems in our world today. Naked Spirituality is a personal journey to deepen spirituality through four practical stages. These three challenging and inspiring books by McLaren offer different perspectives on rethinking Christian life in today’s world.

Thanks from the Librarians!

Thank you to all the members of the congregation who have donated books to the library this fall. The children's book drive during Rally Day was a heartening success, and all the books we selected for potential donation were purchased by the end of the morning. Through your kindness, we added many great books to the library. A few highlights for older children include the Sugar Creek Gang series about the adventures of a group of Christian boys and "American Dream" and "American Challenge", historical novels about the lives of Christian girls in early America. We also received beautiful new picture books for younger children, such as "At Break of Day" which illustrates creation (in the Bible Stories section), and in the Read Aloud section "Four Feet, Two Sandals" about a friendship formed in a refugee camp between two girls and "Butterflies Under Our Hats" about finding hope in a town without luck. From these and other donations, we have added nearly 70 children's books and 30 adult books to the library this fall. And more will be coming soon, as we prepare our annual order of new books. Scroll down on this page to get the most current listing of books.

Also be on the lookout for a mobile library. We will be setting up a book cart in the Connection Point with selections for adults and children related to the sermon series, Sunday School topics, and other educational classes so you can explore these ideas further. Feel free to browse for a moment during coffee hour, and remember that there is a whole library just around the corner if you do not see what you are looking for. And as always, please let us know if you have comments, ques-tions, or would like to help out with the library please contact church-library(at)princetonumc.org

We've just celebrated Christ coming to earth, and so now may be the perfect time to get to know him a little better. To that end, you might read The Jesus I Never Knew by Philip Yancey (1995), which is located in the "Bible" section of our library. Yancey heads back to Scripture to peal away some of the cultural baggage and sugar coating that our understanding of Christ may have accumulated, and takes a hard look at who Christ is, what he taught, and what that means for us as Christians today.

In Part One: Who He Was, Yancey sets Christ's life on earth in his historical context, examines what we learn from Christ's temptation by Satan, and explores what the Bible actually says about who Jesus was. In Part Two: Why He Came, Yancey examines Christ's teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, the company he kept, the miracles he performed, and his death and resurrection. And in Part Three: What He Left Behind, Yancey considers where Christ is now, the Kingdom of God, and the implications of Christ for our lives today. Throughout, Yancey writes with a readable, understandable style and keeps Scriptural accounts of Christ at the center of his thoughts. He weaves in examples from a college course he teaches on the Gospels, literature, movies, and his own experiences to try to understand the Scripture and its implications. Yancey does not claim to have all the answers, but instead presents his honest struggles with these challenges. The result is a thought-provoking book about the radically new way of living that Jesus Christ exemplified in his own life on earth.

An Inventory of Church Library Books

We will periodically update post an revised list, so please check back and see if there is a revised list for your use. Enjoy!

If you see something you would like, the library is open any time the church is. It is located in Room 201, just outside the Sanford Davis Room. There is no borrowing time limit, so keep books as long as they are being useful for you. We just ask that you follow the check out instructions which are posted in the library.

And if you are excited about the library and would like to help us get the word out, please consider joining the committee — no library experience required.
